Administering LAAIs: an education and training workshop

This is the second of two articles that focus on the inter-collaborative work, between education and practice, to enhance theoretical and practical delivery for mental health nurses when administrating long-acting antipsychotic injections (LAAIs). By designing two questionnaires, we were able to evaluate knowledge gain and the satisfaction level of the course delivery by the mental health nurses. These appear initially to identify that such educational strategies can make a positive impact in clinical practice

Earthquake forecasting and its verification

No proven method is currently available for the reliable short time prediction of earthquakes (minutes to months). However, it is possible to make probabilistic hazard assessments for earthquake risk. These are primarily based on the association of small earthquakes with future large earthquakes. In this paper we discuss a new approach to earthquake forecasting. This approach is based on a pattern informatics (PI) method which quantifies temporal variations in seismicity. The output is a map of areas in a seismogenic region (``hotspots'') where earthquakes are forecast to occur in a future 10-year time span. This approach has been successfully applied to California, to Japan, and on a worldwide basis. These forecasts are binary--an earthquake is forecast either to occur or to not occur. The standard approach to the evaluation of a binary forecast is the use of the relative operating characteristic (ROC) diagram, which is a more restrictive test and less subject to bias than maximum likelihood tests. To test our PI method, we made two types of retrospective forecasts for California. The first is the PI method and the second is a relative intensity (RI) forecast based on the hypothesis that future earthquakes will occur where earthquakes have occurred in the recent past. While both retrospective forecasts are for the ten year period 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2009, we performed an interim analysis 5 years into the forecast. ENUMERATING LABELLED GRAPHS WITH CERTAIN NEIGHBORHOOD PROPERTIES

Properties of (connected) graphs whose closed or open neighborhood families are Sperner, anti-Sperner, distinct or none of the proceeding have been extensively examined. In this paper we examine 24 properties of the neighborhood family of a graph. We give asymptotic formulas for the number of (connected) labelled graphs for 12 of these properties. For the other 12 properties, we give bounds for the number of such graphs. We also determine the status (a.a.s. or a.a.n.) in Gn,1/2 of all 24 of these properties. Clinical utility of archived HIV-1 DNA sequencing: Optimizing antiretroviral therapy in patients with a suppressed HIV viral load

Introduction: Viral resistance testing is a cornerstone for selecting antiretroviral therapy (ART) in patients with HIV. Recommendations regarding regimen switching in the setting of virologic suppression are not standardized, but genotypic assays are frequently utilized in this scenario to help determine an efficacious medication regimen. Currently, only one genotypic assay (GA) is available for patients whose HIV RNA is less than 500 copies/mL. Little data exists for its clinical significance or utility in practice.Research Question or Hypothesis: This study aims to assess the utility of the GA by comparing ART regimens and HIV RNA pre- and post-GA.Study Design: This study is a retrospective chart review based on GA reports obtained historically through the Oklahoma State University Internal Medicine Specialty Clinic electronic medical record.Methods: The information gathered consisted of clinical indications for a GA, mutations on GA results, ART at the time of the archive draw, and ART post-GA results. Demographic and disease related information will also be collected. Other information gathered included reported compliance to therapy, and regimen tolerability.Results: Data were gathered from 67 patients, primarily male (87%), with an average age of 45. The most common indications for obtaining a GA were baseline testing (29.8%), re-establishing care (25.4%), and history of non-adherence (20.9%). Approximately half (49%) of patients had an undetectable viral load 3 months after switching their ART regimen based on GA results

Space-Time Clustering and Correlations of Major Earthquakes

Earthquake occurrence in nature is thought to result from correlated elastic stresses, leading to clustering in space and time. We show that occurrence of major earthquakes in California correlates with time intervals when fluctuations in small earthquakes are suppressed relative to the long term average. We estimate a probability of less than 1% that this coincidence is due to random clustering.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to PR

Why Fiction Matters

I explore five features that bear upon literary value and what is involved in appreciating those features. In the introduction, I motivate the project, examine the notion of literary value itself, and sketch the major arguments of the dissertation. In chapter one, I argue that the sonic qualities of a work of fictional literature are always relevant to the literary value of the work. In chapter two, I develop a working account of rhythm in literature and argue that sufficiently appreciating rhythm when reading a work of literature requires performative interpretation. In chapter three, I argue that truth is sometimes relevant to the literary value of fiction. In chapter four, I argue that literature has the capacity to cultivate moral expertise in the intuitive judgment of particular moral cases and that such capacity contributes to literary value. Finally, in chapter five, I argue that fictional literature can provide a reader with the resources for an intimate emotional connection with the author and that a work’s ability to afford such an experience is a literary merit. The larger goal of the dissertation is to make a positive contribution to the discussion of literature’s value, particularly as it concerns prose fiction
